What We Do

Building the Koi culture

Building a thriving “koi culture” involves more than just keeping fish; it’s about fostering a community of enthusiasts, promoting knowledge, and cultivating an appreciation for these living jewels.

How We Work

Establishing your Koi Setup

Building a koi pond is a significant undertaking, but with careful planning and attention to detail, you can create a beautiful and thriving ecosystem for your prized koi. Consider researching each step in more detail and consulting with experienced koi keepers or pond professionals if you have any questions.

A koi pond is a rewarding project, but it requires careful planning and execution to ensure a healthy and beautiful environment for your fish. Here are the general steps involved:

01

Determine the Location:
Sunlight:
Aim for a location that receives a mix of sun and shade. Too much direct sun can lead to excessive algae growth and high water temperatures.
Proximity to Trees:
Avoid areas directly under deciduous trees, as falling leaves can decompose and pollute the water, requiring more maintenance. Tree roots can also damage the liner over time.
Level Ground:
Choose a relatively level area to minimize excavation and ensure even water distribution.
Accessibility to Utilities:
Consider the proximity to electrical outlets for pumps and filters, and access to a water source for filling and water changes. Visibility: Select a location where you can easily view and enjoy your koi.

02

Decide on Size and Shape:
Size Matters:
Koi grow large! A good rule of thumb is at least 1000 gallons for a few small koi, with an additional 500 gallons for each additional adult koi. Deeper ponds (at least 3-4 feet deep) provide more stable temperatures and protection from predators.
Shape:
Consider a shape that complements your landscape. Avoid sharp corners, as they can hinder water circulation and make cleaning difficult. Gentle curves are ideal.

03

Plan Filtration and Circulation:
Koi produce a significant amount of waste, so a robust filtration system is crucial for maintaining water quality. Plan for both mechanical (removing solids) and biological (breaking down waste) filtration.
Pump Selection:
Choose a pump with adequate flow rate to circulate the entire pond volume several times per hour and power your filtration system.
Plumbing:
Plan the layout of pipes and connections for the pump, filter(s), and any water features.
